About the event
During the month of May, Colleton County Historical & Preservation Society is hosting The Walterborough 17.83: The Run/Walk from the Cyclone. The race is named in honor of Paul and Jacob Walter moving inland from the coast in 1783.
In April 1879 a massive tornado came through Colleton County. The “Cyclone” as locals called it only lasted a few minutes, yet nearly every building in Walterboro was destroyed or damaged. Before the storm came through, Colleton County was also known as Hickory Valley for the hundreds of hickory trees throughout the county. Legend has it that not a single one of those trees survived.
Run, walk, bike, or move (as long as it doesn't involve a motor) a total of 17.83 miles throughout the entire month of May. You have the entire month to complete or beat the 17.83 miles. It can be completed in segments or all at once.
